Ukulele Duo Serves Up Choice Tunes Freshly Scrambled
0

The duo of Robin Hoffman and Richard Perlmutter, based in Western MA, sing and play ukuleles. Their act, called The Ukulele Scramble is funny, entertaining, and masterful. It also starts with a repertoire that's unusual for ukulele players - classical music.

Robin and Richard love Beethoven, Bach and Brahms, as well as Renaissance music, and art and parlor songs. But as the name of their group implies, they don't exactly play it straight. The music they play is "scrambled." They pluck a piece by Beethoven like it's bluegrass, fingerpick a work by Mendelssohn like a folk song, and play an art song by composer Amy Beach like 50's pop. Many of their songs have new or updated lyrics by Richard, who is a 4x GRAMMY Nominee - earned for his witty lyrics set to classical music in his series of Beethoven's Wig albums. Ukulele Scramble songs are served up in a harmonious, humorous, and happy-go-lucky style that these two veterans bring to the stage.

The Ukulele Scramble

Both Robin and Richard have had long careers in the performing arts. Individually they have performed at the Hollywood Bowl, Metropolitan Opera, Kennedy Center, Grammy Museum and Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. Before her current career as a ukulele player and instructor at Greenfield Community College, Robin was a professional ballet dancer with The Joffrey Ballet, and Metropolitan Opera. Richard has toured throughout North America with Beethoven's Wig, and plays classical piano, guitar, and mandolin. He has also produced music for GRAMMY AWARD winner Nickel Creek, and GRAMMY Lifetime Achievement Winners Tom Paxton and Ella Jenkins.

The Ukulele Scramble started performing in the summer of 2017, but Robin and Richard had played together previously for over three years. Along with singer and uke player Marlene Wong, they founded The Well Tempered Ukes, which specialized in Renaissance and Art Music. The group built a strong following playing throughout New England and New York at festivals, libraries and arts centers. When Marlene departed to pursue her passion for singing classical repertoire, Robin and Richard started scrambling and the Ukulele Scramble was born.

Robin and Richard are performing regularly and recording their first album. With so much music to scramble this ukulele duo has a recipe for success!
